The University Of Calabar, has suspended Livinson Arikpo a malabor hostel Governor, from the department of fisheries and agriculture for allegedly leading a student protest.
Our correspondent exclusively gathered that on Tuesday, July 2, 2024 the university hostel had experienced a lack of power supply and water, which led to a demonstration by the hostel student.
In a press statement, which emanated from the office of the registrar, Mr Gabriel Egbe, titled “Suspension From Studies” it was learnt that Arikpo had allegedly mobilized students for the students, locked out staff from the University, as well as disruption of academic activities.
Some sources who spoke to our correspondent on conditions of animosity noted that Arikpo was not responsible for leading the protest, rather he was asleep in his hostel when the protest occurred.
“It was on Tuesday 2nd July, this school is very autocratic, Arikpo was not the one who led the protest, he was in his hostel sleeping.
“The student protested because of epileptic power supply. The SUG President came, they tried to calm the student, but couldn’t because of how many we were. It was not even Arikpo but now he has been suspended unjustly for something he knows nothing about.
“We just want him to be reinstated because he was not the one who led the protest, the governor is innocent”- The source said.
Street news had put a called the Vice chancellor Prof Florence Obi she said
“Yes it is true, have you seen a copy of the letter, reach out to the Student Union Government President before you can interview me”.
Our correspondent also called the University public relations officer. He said “What else do you want to hear, the boy was suspended. It is true, go ahead and report it, that information was put across through the office of the Registrar and not the Public Relations Office.”
All calls put across to Blessing Alims, the student Union Government President, proved abortive.
