The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a suspected member of the proscribed Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB).
The arrest followed plans by the group to enforce an illegal Sit-at-Home order scheduled for May 30, 2025.
The suspect, identified as Friday Obeta, aged 37, was apprehended by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Nnewi, following credible intelligence. A motorcycle, a branded MASSOB T-shirt, and an operational identification card of the outlawed group were recovered during the arrest.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, on Wednesday the suspect has already made significant confessions.
“The suspect confessed to being a member and informant for the proscribed group,” Ikenga said.
“He has provided useful information that is currently aiding our investigations and will likely lead to further arrests.”
In response to the arrest, the Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu directed all tactical units to scale up surveillance and prevent any unlawful gathering in the state.
“This arrest is a major breakthrough. We are not taking chances,” CP Orutugu stated.
“Our operatives have been charged to intensify onslaught operations and ensure that no unlawful Sit-at-Home or similar activity disrupts peace in Anambra.”
He further urged residents to cooperate with law enforcement and report any suspicious activity.
“We count on the support of the good people of Anambra State. Together, we can maintain peace and ensure that the activities of proscribed groups are permanently dismantled,” the Commissioner added.
The Anambra Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety of lives and property and warned that anyone found engaging in activities associated with outlawed groups would face the full weight of the law.
