The Central Bank of Nigeria on Thursday said contrary the old Naira Note is still in circulation.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by the acting director, corporate Communication Sidi Ali Hakama.
The clarifications according to the apex bank followed the discussion at various fora suggesting that the old series of the N200, N500, and N1,000 will cease to be a legal tender from 31st December 2024.
“The attention of the Central Bank Of Nigeria (CBN) has been drawn to discussions at different fora suggesting that the old series of the N200, N500, and N1,000 banknotes shall cease to be legal tender on December 31st, 2024.
“We wish to categorically that such claims are false and calculated to disrupt the country’s payment system”.
The CBN also directed its branches to continue to accept and issue all denominations of the currency, stating that the old and new naira notes are still in force.
“Similarly the CBN’s directive to all its branches to continue to issue and accept all denominations of Nigerian banknotes, old and re-designed to and from deposit money banks remains in Force.
“ We urge Nigerians to continue to accept all naira banknotes old or redesigned for their day to day transaction and handle them with the utmost care to safeguard and protect their lifecycle.”
