Akinrodoye Samuel, a Nigerian swimmer, has swam the entire length of Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos to raise awareness for mental health in Africa’s most populous nation, Nigeria. This is the same river where many have jumped to their deaths.
Akinrodoye, a swimming coach, was seen completing the swimming of nearly 7.45 miles. He said he was moved by the experience of a friend who nearly took his own life due to depression.
“We are doing this, too, so people don’t just think that suicide is the next option,” Samuel told Reuters after finishing the swim in the Lagos Lagoon on Saturday.
