The Press Unit of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has responded to the news that Nigerians looted a warehouse in Abuja over hardship. The statement says “This is to clarify that the looted warehouse does not belong to NEMA. However, the Agency sympathizes with owners of the looted facility.”
As an advance security measure, the agency is said to have given instructions on ways to tighten security to avoid further stories. “To forestall any security breach at NEMA facilities, the Director General Mustapha Habib Ahmed, has directed Zonal Directors and Heads of Operations to strengthen security in and around the Agency’s offices and warehouses nationwide.”
Recall that videos and photos were all over the media space over the weekend indicating that NEMA warehouse in Abuja was looted. The agency’s response has brought clarity.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) was established via Act 12 as amended by Act 50 of 1999, to manage disasters in Nigeria. It has been tackling disaster related issues through the establishment of concrete structures.
