The Cross River State Government has issued a strong advisory to residents, particularly those within Calabar Metropolis and nearby local government areas, following a violent windstorm that swept through the region on Wednesday, causing extensive damage to infrastructure and property.
The storm, accompanied by heavy rainfall, uprooted trees, toppled electricity poles, and damaged several homes and businesses in the Southern Senatorial District.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Erasmus Ekpang, urged residents to trim weak or overgrown trees around their properties and avoid contact with fallen power lines.
“We implore residents to exercise caution and prioritize their safety by staying away from broken electricity poles and live wires,” the statement read.
The government also appealed to relevant agencies, especially the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company to act swiftly in addressing the destruction caused to the power infrastructure and restore electricity across affected areas.
“In the meantime, citizens without any urgent business outdoors are encouraged to remain indoors until normalcy is restored,” Dr. Ekpang added.
The government has emphasized the importance of public cooperation to ensure that no casualties are recorded as a result of the incident.
The state reassured residents of its commitment to restoring order and providing support where necessary.
