The Cross River State House of Assembly has passed the Green Economy Commission Bill, 2024 into law.
This was disclosed in a Press statement sent to Street News on Thursday by Matthew Okache, the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker.
The bill, an Executive initiative, was presented by a special committee led by Rt. Hon. Francis Bassey Asuquo, who represents the Odukpani State Constituency and the leader of the House.
The newly enacted law is designed to mitigate environmental risks, address ecological scarcities, and promote economic growth that minimizes the unsustainable pressure on natural resources.
Asuquo stressed that unchecked extraction, processing, and production of raw materials have led to environmental degradation, deforestation, and a negative impact on economic and social activities across the state.
“The Green Economy bill emerged from the need to address these critical challenges,” Asuquo explained, “and to create a sustainable, fair, and inclusive economic system through public and private investments aimed at reducing energy consumption and safeguarding our natural environment.”-The statement reads.
The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem praised the bill as timely and crucial, saying its role is to attract investments and foster economic growth in Cross River State.
