Security operatives have taken over the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) secretariat in Akwa Ibom State amid a heated dispute over the dissolution of the State Working Committee. The National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP, led by National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba, announced the dissolution of the state executive committee and appointed a 31-member caretaker committee.
However, National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu swiftly countered the announcement, stating that no NWC meeting authorized the decision. Anyanwu’s statement has thrown the party into confusion, with Akwa Ibom PDP Chairman Aniekan Akpan rejecting the dissolution order.
Akpan described the purported sack as “illegal” and affirmed that the state executive committee remains intact, set to serve out their four-year tenure. He alleged that divisive elements within the party aim to undermine the PDP in Akwa Ibom State. Akpan emphasized the party’s commitment to the rule of law and its constitution, highlighting that some executive members were listed in the caretaker committee without their consent.
Akpan urged party members and supporters to disregard the dissolution order and remain loyal to the current leadership. He also reaffirmed the party’s relationship with Governor Umo Eno, stating that the governor’s leadership transcends party lines. The crisis has raised questions about the party’s internal dynamics and the legitimacy of the NWC’s decision.
