The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has lamented the crippling effect of court orders on its anti-corruption investigations.
EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, revealed that frequent adjournments, conflicting court orders, contempt charges, and restraining injunctions have hindered the commission’s efforts to probe high-profile corruption cases.
At the 6th EFCC-National Judicial Institute Workshop for Justices and Judges, on Monday in Abuja, Olukoyede stated that these challenges have resulted in the commission being unable to conduct investigations in at least 10 states.
He noted that the situation has severely impacted the ability of the commission to effectively combat corruption, despite working tirelessly to combat corruption, arresting several high-profile individuals and recovering billions of naira in stolen funds.
He said “the specter of frequent adjournments of high profile corruption cases arising from frivolous applications, conflicting orders by courts of coordinate jurisdiction in corruption cases, intemperate contempt orders hauled at the Commission’s leadership, unwarranted orders of injunction restraining the Commission from investigating cases, are among a plethora of issues that bother the EFCC”.
