The government of Akwa Ibom State, through the Commissioner for Works and Fire Service, Professor Eno Ibanga, has declared that some sections of the Calabar-Itu dual carriageway will be shutdown starting from Monday May 20, 2024 till further notice due to ongoing excavation work in the state.
The Commissioner announced this in a statement made available to newsmen on Friday in Uyo, stating that the road closure would give way for the ongoing excavation work involved in the construction of an underground drainage system in the area. He also noted that the government regrets the inconveniences caused by the decision.
Ibanga’s statement further gave rerouting instructions to commuters who will apply the road from the said date. In his words, “The Akwa Ibom State Government wishes to inform the general public that starting from Monday, May 20th, 2024, the Calabar- Itu dual carriageway will be closed to traffic at Calabar -Itu Highway by Park Road intersection and Calabar- Itu dual carriageway by Mandela Street intersection, till further notice. This is to pave way for the deep excavation work involved in the ongoing construction of 0.97km underground drainage system at Tabernacle road, which is advancing towards the discharge point at Calabar- Itu dual carriageway.”
“In view of this, mini buses and light vehicles are, please, advised to use either Ikpa road through Uyo village road or Ikot Udoro Street through Enen Mkprong to Calabar- Itu highway.
