Ahmad, writing on X (formerly Twitter) said: “The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus. Amin.”

Buhari, 82, had battled undisclosed health challenges for years, many of which became public during his presidency. Though details of his final ailment remain unconfirmed, family sources indicate he had been receiving medical care in the United Kingdom for several weeks before his passing.

Born in Daura, Katsina State, Buhari served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1983 to 1985, following a coup that ousted the civilian government. Decades later, in 2015, he returned as a civilian president under the All Progressives Congress (APC), defeating incumbent Goodluck Jonathan in a historic election. He was re-elected in 2019 and served until 2023.

Widely known for his tough anti-corruption stance, Buhari’s administration was marked by efforts to reform the public sector, boost infrastructure, and tackle insecurity.

Buhari is survived by his wife, former First Lady Aisha Buhari, children, and grandchildren.
