Tension erupted at the national secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja on Monday morning as armed police officers and other security operatives reportedly attempted to disrupt the party’s scheduled 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.

The PDP has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of using federal security agencies to frustrate the NEC meeting, which was slated to address key issues including the lingering crisis over the office of the National Secretary.

“This is a clear attack on democracy. Armed security personnel stormed the PDP secretariat this morning with the aim of disrupting a constitutionally scheduled NEC meeting,” a senior party official said under anonymity. “They blocked entry, intimidated staff and BOT members. This is unacceptable.”

The hashtag #PDP100thNECMeetingMustHold began trending on social media shortly after news of the confrontation broke, with supporters and party faithful calling for immediate withdrawal of the security personnel and urging the meeting to go on as planned.

Despite the tension, party leaders say the NEC meeting will proceed as scheduled, citing Section 31(3) of the PDP Constitution, which gives statutory authority to decisions taken by the NEC.

As of the time of filing this report, senior PDP figures  and BOT leaders were locked in emergency consultations, while security around the area remained heavy.
