A former Minister of Science and Technology, and former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, is dead.

The first civilian governor of Abia State died after a brief illness in an undisclosed hospital in Nigeria. The ailment leading to his death could not be ascertained as at the time of filing this report.

Onu was a Nigerian politician, author and engineer until his death in April 2024. He was born on 1 December 1951

It would be recalled that the late 72-year-old former minister contested for the presidential flag of the All Progressive Congress (APC) during the 2023 general election, but lost to President Bola Tinubu.

He served as minister under the immediate past administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

He was the longest serving minister in the ministry of science, technology and innovation of Nigeria from November 2015 until he resignedto contest the presidential primary in November 2022.
