The Bakassi Local Government Area in Cross River State, on Tuesday came together yesterday to celebrate their rich fishing heritage at the Bakassi Fish Festival.
Speaking in a goodwill message at the opening ceremony, the Leader of the Bakassi Legislative Assembly RT Hon Grace Bassey praised the organizers and sponsors of the event, saying that the festival was a testament to the resilience, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit of the people of Bakassi.
She noted that fish festival is a significant event that promotes tourism, commerce, and cultural exchange.
“Distinguished guests, esteemed organizers, community leaders, entrepreneurs, and my dear people of Bakassi, it is with immense joy and honor that I stand before you today as the Leader of the Bakassi Legislative Assembly to officially open this year’s Bakassi Fish Festival.
“This festival is more than just a celebration of our rich aquatic resources; it is a testament to the resilience, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit of the people of
Bakassi.
“Our community has long been known for its bountiful waters and the
skillful men and women who bring the treasures of the sea to our tables. Today,
we celebrate their efforts, their craft, and the rich cultural heritage that fishing has bestowed upon us.
“I would like to extend my deepest appreciation to the organizers, sponsors, and all those who have worked tirelessly to make this festival a reality. Your efforts demonstrate the power of vision and dedication, and I am confident that this event will leave a lasting positive impact on our community.”-Hon Grace said.
RT Hon Grace Bassey also called on member’s of the community, to reflect on the importance of unity and collective progress, which she noted is aimed at achieving great things.
“The Bakassi Fish Festival is not just a cultural showcase; it is also a platform for economic empowerment. By bringing together fishermen, traders, artisans, and visitors, we are creating opportunities for trade, networking, and tourism, all of which contribute to the economic growth of Bakassi.
“This event also highlights the potential of sustainable fishing practices, ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy the abundance of our waters.
As we celebrate, let us also use this occasion to reflect on the importance of unity and collective progress. The festival reminds us that when we come together as a community, we can achieve great things.

Highlights of the event was a friendly football match between the Nigeria and the Cameroon community.
