The Akwa Ibom State Government has announced an adjustment to its “Work-Free Farming Days” policy, reducing the frequency from twice a month to only the first Friday of each month, effective June 2025.
The move follows a review of the programme’s performance in empowering civil servants through agricultural engagement, while also addressing the need to maintain efficient public service delivery.
This revision was conveyed in a statement issued on Thursday, by the Secretary to the State Government Enobong Uwah.
Previously, the initiative granted civil servants leave from official duties on the first and third Fridays of every month to engage in farming activities. With the new directive, only the first Friday will be observed as a work-free farming day.
“This change will allow officials to continue contributing to our agricultural revolution while ensuring that the duties and responsibilities of government are discharged without undue interruption,” the statement noted.
The government emphasized that the policy remains part of its broader strategy to boost food production and encourage self-reliance among the workforce. However, certain categories of workers have been exempted from the exercise. These include staff of the Governor’s Office, Deputy Governor SSG’s Head of Civil Service, and all emergency and essential services.
Uwah also disclosed that all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies have been directed to take note of the change and ensure full compliance.
The statement reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting agriculture as a key pillar of the state’s economic agenda under the leadership of Governor Umo Eno.
