The Akwa Ibom State Government has dismissed as false and misleading a recent report by The Mail newspaper which alleged that the state received N653.6 billion and expended N199.6 billion in the first quarter of 2025.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Aniekan Umanah, yesterday the government described the publication as a gross misrepresentation of the state’s financial status, based on inaccurate figures and a flawed interpretation of public finance.
“This report is not only false but reflects a gross misrepresentation of the State’s financial position, the figures quoted are inaccurate, misleading, and entirely detached from verified financial records. The publication appears to be the product of a flawed interpretation and a lack of basic understanding of public finance, particularly the concept of carry-over balances from the previous year.”-the statement reads.
The statement noted that such balances are standard components of treasury frameworks and budgetary processes, and should not be mistaken for new revenue inflows.
Commending Governor Umo Umo for setting high standards in transparent governance, the commissioner emphasized that the state’s finances are managed with prudence and in line with global best practices.
It reiterated the administration’s focus on delivering people-oriented projects across all 31 local government areas through the ARISE Agenda.
The government further expressed appreciation for the improved federal allocations under President Bola Tinubu, which have enabled the state to meet its obligations to workers, settle pensions, and drive infrastructure and social development.
Reiterating the role of the media as partners in progress, the government cautioned against the spread of misinformation and called on journalists to uphold professional ethics by verifying sensitive data with relevant authorities.
“Facts must never be sacrificed at the altar of sensational banner headlines. Exaggerations without context not only mislead the public but also erode public trust in journalism,” the statement warned. “In rushing to break the news, journalists should endeavour not to break the fabric of society.
As the administration approaches its second anniversary, the statement highlighted visible achievements in agriculture, rural development, infrastructure, security, education, healthcare, and SME support.
It concluded by urging the public to disregard the erroneous report and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transparency.
“The Akwa Ibom State Government remains resolute in its commitment to transparency and will, as always, publish the full details of its financial records,” the statement assured.
