The shores of Esuk Mkparawa in Ikang Town came alive with vibrant cultural displays and maritime excellence as the 4th edition of the Bakassi International Fish Festival (BIFF 4.0) successfully concluded on Wednesday, December 17, 2025.

The two-day event, which serves as a cornerstone for rebranding the region and reviving its fishing identity, brought together high-ranking government officials, traditional rulers, and the local community to celebrate Bakassi’s rich aquatic heritage.

Bakassi International Fish Festival Launches 30-Day Countdown

The festival officially commenced on Tuesday, December 16, with a colorful opening ceremony. The Executive Chairman of Bakassi LGA, Otuekong Hon. Effiong Etim Okon, performed the official flag-off, marking the symbolic commencement of activities alongside the local fishing community.

The first day featured traditional rites and prayers, followed by the emotive “Letters from Fisherfolk” session and the “Whistle Blow” send-off for the fishing competition. The day transitioned into a vibrant “Pageantry Night” at the Ikang Motor Park, showcasing the Onyonyo/Usobo parade and local creative arts.

The Grand Finale on Wednesday, December 17, reached a fever pitch with the Boat Regatta and fish exhibition. Highlights of the closing day included fishing competition, where the fisherfolk arrived and presented the day’s catches, displays of local wrestling that drew cheers from the massive crowd, official presentation of the new Mr. & Miss Bakassi, presentation of awards and prizes to winners of all contests and competitions.

The 4th edition saw an unprecedented gathering of stakeholders and political leaders, reflecting the festival’s acceptance by all stakeholders including the state and local government. The festival welcomed the presence of dignitaries, and stakeholders, including the Executive Chairman of Bakassi, Otuekong Hon. Effiong Etim Okon, Hon. Princess Christiana Eso, Vice Chairman of Bakassi LGA and Chairperson of all Vice Chairmen in Cross River State, Hon. Eyo Bassey, Member representing Bakassi State Constituency, Commander Patrick Odiong, Security Adviser (South) to the Governor, Rt. Hon. Ekpo Ekpo Bassey, Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Hon. Chief Ani Esin, Special Adviser to the Governor on NDDC, Hon. Dr. Edisua Usang Iso, Former Chairman of Bakassi LGA, Mrs. Ann Mesembe, Zonal Coordinator of American Corner Calabar, Rev. Dr. David Owo, Senior Pastor and Founder of Mega Word International Christian Center, amongst other dignitaries.

The event was further graced by members of the LGA Council, councilors, and the Traditional Rulers Council. The host community was led by the Village Head, HH Chief Antigha Cobham, alongside the fishing community, women, youth, and children who turned out in large numbers.

The organizers noted that the festival has grown from a volunteer effort into a stakeholders-backed event aimed at attracting international investors to the region’s Blue Economy.

As the event drew to an end, participants were encouraged to prepare for an even larger 5th edition in 2026, marking the official close of a festival that continues to serve as a symbol of resilience and determination of the Bakassi people.
