The Cross River State Government has confirmed the rescue of 17 passengers who were abducted 11 days ago along the Calabar-Oron waterways. The rescue operation was carried out by a combined team of security agencies and local vigilante groups.

According to a statement signed by Mr. Bassey Asuquo, spokesperson for the Cross River State Government, the victims were freed after sustained intelligence gathering and joint surveillance operations.

The rescued passengers are currently receiving medical treatment and psychological support at a government-owned facility in Calabar. Governor Bassey Otu has directed the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the Ministry of Health to provide full rehabilitation and reintegration support for the victims.

The Nigerian Navy has intensified patrols and surveillance along the waterways, warning that any attempt to undermine maritime security will be met with decisive action.
