The Governor of Cross River State Bassey Otu yesterday pledged to expand the fleet of the state-owned airline, Cali Air, with the acquisition of more aircraft to boost transportation, tourism, and commerce.
Otu made the commitment in Calabar during the commissioning of the state’s ultramodern library and two newly acquired Cali Air jets by the Cross River State Government, at the Margaret Ekpo Airport.
The Vice President of Nigeria, Kashim Shettima, attended the event and joined the governor in officially inaugurating the projects.
The governor said the two initiatives formed part of his administration’s drive to strengthen the state’s economy and create opportunities for residents in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“This is part of our vision to build a robust sub-national economy, ensure food security, and open Cross River to greater opportunities,” Otu said. “The ultramodern state library will serve our youths in this digital age, while the expansion of the Cali Air fleet will boost connectivity, tourism, and commerce.”
He added that his government would take delivery of more aircraft in the coming months to complement ongoing road and transport infrastructure projects, aimed at reducing travel costs for residents and businesses.
In his remarks, Vice President Shettima commended the state government for prioritising education and transportation, describing the projects as a bold step towards sustainable development.
“The library will serve as a centre of knowledge and innovation, and the expansion of Cali Air will accelerate economic transformation,” Shettima said.
The new Cali Air jets are expected to commence operations immediately, servicing both domestic and regional routes.
