Fourteen youth  from Akwa Ibom State are facing possible jail terms after being arrested by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged involvement in internet-related fraud.

The suspects were apprehended on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, in a sting operation coordinated by the Uyo Zonal Directorate of the Commission.

The operation, which was based on credible intelligence, was carried out in Afaha Offot, Ikot Atuen, Abak, and Nwaniba areas of the state.

Items recovered from the suspects include 19 mobile phones and three laptop computers believed to have been used in perpetrating the alleged cybercrimes.

The EFCC, in a statement on Wednesday, said the suspects would be prosecuted upon the conclusion of investigations.

“They were arrested through an intelligence-driven sting operation carried out in various locations in Akwa Ibom State. Items recovered from them include 19 mobile phones and three laptops. The suspects will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded,” the statement read in part.

The Commission also reiterated its commitment to ridding the country of internet-related crimes, warning that anyone found culpable would face the full weight of the law.
