The CP noted that while the police continue their investigations into the circumstances surrounding the businessman’s death, attempts by online personalities to politicize or sensationalize the matter were unnecessary and potentially destabilizing.

He further revealed that the family of the deceased had formally dissociated themselves from any candlelight procession or public memorial being proposed in Mr. Onyekere’s name. According to the CP, the family has chosen to mourn privately and urged the public to respect their wishes.

“Anambra remains one of the most peaceful states in the region, and we will not allow anyone—no matter their social media following—to incite public unrest or spread misinformation,”  Orutugu said.

He emphasized that the Police Command, in synergy with other security agencies and stakeholders, has worked tirelessly to maintain peace in the state and will not hesitate to take legal action against anyone who attempts to undermine public order whether online or offline.

The Police Commissioner also reassured residents and visitors of their safety, urging them to continue with their lawful activities without fear or panic.

Meanwhile, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, reiterated the importance of responsible social media engagement, warning that any individual found culpable of incitement or public disturbance will face the full weight of the law.

“Freedom of expression does not give anyone the liberty to spread falsehoods, attack grieving families, or stoke unnecessary tension,” Ikenga said.

The warning comes amid rising public interest and online debates surrounding the death of Mr. Onyekere, which has sparked conflicting narratives across social platforms.
