President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Pro-Chancellors, Chairmen, and members of Governing Councils for federal universities across the country, including newly established institutions.
Among the universities affected is the Federal University of Environment and Technology, Koroma/Saakpenwa in Ogoni, Rivers State, where a new governing council and principal officers have been named ahead of the universityโs official commencement in September 2025.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu named Prof. Don Mon Baridam, a professor of Management and former lecturer at the University of Port Harcourt, as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the governing council of the Ogoni-based university.
Also appointed is Prof. Chinedu Mmom, a professor of Geography and Environmental Management at the University of Port Harcourt, who will serve as Vice-Chancellor. Mmom is a former Commissioner for Education in Rivers State.
The Governing Council of the university reflects national diversity with the inclusion of members from various regions, including Mr. Emmanuel Onoja (North Central), Mr. Hamid Adekunle (South West), Prof. Chima Oji (South East), and Alhaji Abdullahi Magaji Lamda (North West).
President Tinubu also approved the appointment of key principal officers to ensure the smooth take-off of the new institution. They include Dr. Mpigi Monday Douglas as Registrar, Zoryii Josco Nwaimanie as Bursar, and Dr. Saghanen Ntogo G. B. as Librarian.
The university is scheduled to admit its first batch of students in September 2025, following the passage and signing of the bill establishing the institution by President Tinubu on February 3, 2025.
The appointments, the presidency noted, are part of ongoing efforts by the Tinubu administration to reposition Nigeriaโs higher education system and promote inclusive national development.
