The Akwa Ibom State Government has issued a 90-day ultimatum to all legitimate allottees of undeveloped plots and abandoned buildings at the Ewet Housing Estate in Uyo to begin construction or risk revocation of their allocation.
This action forms part of the broader urban renewal drive under the ARISE Agenda of the Umo Eno administration, which also includes ongoing infrastructural upgrades and beautification of major city hubs.
The directive was issued during the State Executive Council meeting held on Monday, at the Government House, Uyo. The meeting which was presided over by Governor Umo Eno, was attended by key members of the cabinet, including Deputy Governor Akon Eyakenyi and other top officials.
According to the Commissioner for Information, Aniekan Umanah, the move is aimed at enhancing security, curbing criminal hideouts, and restoring the aesthetics of the estate, which has suffered neglect due to overgrown and uncompleted structures.
“The Ministry of Housing and the Akwa Ibom State Property and Investment Company (APICO) have been directed to enforce compliance,” the statement read. “Failure to commence meaningful development within the stipulated time will attract appropriate sanctions, including revocation.”
The government noted that the estate, originally designed as a prime residential area in the capital city, has seen increasing complaints from residents and urban planning authorities over long-abandoned plots and derelict buildings.
At the same meeting, the Executive Council also considered updates on youth welfare, investment portfolios, and preparations for the forthcoming Akwa Ibom State Sports Festival.
