Olukoyede, who spoke through the Acting Zonal Director of the EFCC’s Benin Zonal Directorate, Assistant Commander of the EFCC I, Effa Okim, issued the warning at the “Regional Youth Convergence on Internal Security and Digital Innovation” held at Unity Hall, Government House, Asaba, Delta State.

The event organised by the Delta Youth Parliament,  brought together youth leaders, security experts, digital innovators and policy-makers from across the Niger Delta.

According to the EFCC boss, while Nigerian youths are known for their intelligence, resilience and creativity, many have unfortunately diverted their talents into internet fraud, a move he described as short-sighted and harmful to the country’s future.

“Our youths are vibrant, forward-looking, and capable of competing anywhere in the world,” Olukoyede said. “But sadly, some have chosen the path of infamy by engaging in cybercrime. This menace is now pervasive, and it stains our image as a people and a nation.”

He listed the consequences of youth involvement in cybercrime to include reputational damage, loss of foreign investor confidence, stifling of innovation, and the collapse of legitimate industries.

“The Commission remains committed to prosecuting anyone found culpable. We will continue to enforce the law and ensure that those who cross the line are brought to book,” he added.

Olukoyede urged young Nigerians to channel their energies into legitimate ventures and digital innovation, noting that the country is rich with opportunities that can be harnessed for national development.

Earlier in his remarks, the Chairman of the Planning Committee, Delta Youth Parliament, Amukoyo Onome, said the convergence was designed to foster dialogue on sustainable strategies for internal security, digital transformation, and youth empowerment in the region.

“This platform brings together key stakeholders to brainstorm on securing critical national assets, curbing cybercrime, and empowering our youth through innovation,” he said.
