Nine out of the eleven National Assembly members from Cross River State have endorsed President Bola Tinubu and Governor Bassey Otu as the sole candidates for the 2027 general elections.
The endorsement took place on Thursday at the International Conference Centre in Calabar, the state capital, during a meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Caucus in the National Assembly from Cross River.
Speaking on behalf of the group Eteng Jonah Williams, representing the Central Senatorial District, praised the leadership and developmental achievements of both Tinubu and Otu. He described them as deserving of another term in office.
โLetโs start with Mr. President, who is our father. The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is a testament to the studentsโ loan, one of the benefits of subsidy removal, and several other projects. โFor us in Cross River, weโre endorsing him wholeheartedly to be the sole candidate come 2027.โ-He said.
Williams also highlighted Governor Otuโs progress, including the renovation of the state library and improved security through the recently launched Operation Okwok.
โWeโve seen what heโs done: the state library, which now wears a new look, the security improvement, and projects in every local government, even in my village,โ he said. โOur Governor and his Deputy donโt need to be stressed. For the peace of our land, weโll say, letโs endorse him and the party wonโt stress him.โ
Mike Etaba, who represents Obubra/Etung Federal Constituency, said the endorsement was meant to allow both leaders to focus on governance without distractions.
โWeโre endorsing them to concentrate and continue so they wonโt be distracted,โ he said.
Bassey Akiba of Calabar Municipality/Odukpani Federal Constituency noted that the endorsement aligns with legislative practice.
โLike we do in the parliament, when thereโs an enactment at the national level, we try to domicile it in the sub-national. So we are here to endorse the President and the Governor for a second term,โ Akiba said.
Other APC lawmakers present included Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong (Southern Senatorial District), Hon. Emil Inyang (Akamkpa/Biase), Rt. Hon. Alex Egbonna (Abi/Yakurr), Hon. Victor Abang (Ikom/Boki), Hon. Joseph Bassey (Akpabuyo/Bakassi/Calabar South), and Hon. Peter Akpanke (Obanliku/Bekwarra/Obudu), the only member from the Peopleโs Democratic Party (PDP) at the event.
