The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a suspected pipeline vandal believed to be a member of a criminal syndicate operating within the state.
The suspect, identified as Ekwere Obiowo Ernest, 36, a native of Ukam Village in the Edemeya Clan, was apprehended in the early hours of Friday, May 9, 2025, following a swift police response to a distress call.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Timfon John, disclosed that the arrest occurred at about 5:05 a.m. in Ikot Oboron Enyin Village after a Marine Police officer alerted the Command to suspicious activity near a pipeline.
“Operatives from the Command immediately mobilized to the location, where they encountered a group of individuals engaged in suspected vandalism. Upon sighting the police, the suspects attempted to flee. However, Ernest was apprehended at the scene, while others escaped into the surrounding bush,” the statement read.
Items recovered from the suspect include a Fireman FGP 088EG generator, a filing iron, a filing machine, a Siemens Germany toolbox, welding electrodes, various spanners, 24 large bolts and nuts, a fabricated iron bar, and a food flask containing fufu—suggesting preparations for prolonged field operations.
SP John confirmed that the suspect is in custody and undergoing interrogation as investigations continue. She reaffirmed the Command’s determination to eradicate crimes that threaten public safety and critical infrastructure.
“The Akwa Ibom State Police Command remains committed to protecting lives, property, and national assets. We urge citizens to report any suspicious activity, as public cooperation is vital to our success,” she stated.
Meanwhile, efforts are ongoing to track down other members of the gang who remain at large.
