Groups Celebrate Peace Day in Bakassi, Commend Governor Otu on Deep Seaport Project

Bakassi, a community that once faced conflict, is beginning to experience peace and prosperity thanks to the efforts of the Governor of Cross River State, Senator Prince Bassey Otu. The Bakassi Union, led by Hon. Chief Ani, commended the Governor during the International Day of Peace held in Ikang Town, Bakassi.

In his opening remarks, the President appealed to the people of Bakassi to embrace peace and development. He mentioned that the 2024 International Day of Peace celebration serves as a wake-up call for the people of Bakassi to imbibe the culture of peace. “Culture is the way of life of the people. As such, peace should be our culture,” Ani stated.

The Chairman of the event, Rtd AIG Enene Okon, praised Governor Otu for his determined efforts in making the Bakassi Deep Seaport Project a reality. The Esighi Community Leader urged the youth to recognize the potential of the project and shun violence, emphasizing that the project is for the benefit of the Bakassi people. The village head of Ikang Town, Chief Antigha Cobham, also lent his voice to the peace movement, heralding development in the community.

The State Security Adviser to the Governor of Cross River State, Major General Okoi Obono (Rtd), who was the Special Guest of Honour, expressed gratitude to the people of Bakassi for the warm hospitality extended to him during the World Peace Day celebration in Ikang. He highlighted the importance of peace for development and urged the Bakassi people to embrace peace. He assured them that no form of injustice would be tolerated from imposters attempting to cause discord, disunity, and confusion in their communities.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on General Duties, Barr. Ekpenyong Akiba, extended warm felicitations to the people of Bakassi. The APC Chieftain mentioned that the Governor considers himself part of the Bakassi community and is committed to positioning the Local Government in the global market space.

Highlights of the event included symbolic performances such as the release of a tied pigeon into the air by dignitaries, and the dedication and distribution of stickers.

The event featured a Peace Walk around the environs of Ikang, with goodwill messages from top government officials, religious icons, traditional rulers, youth, and respected stakeholders.

The event attracted attendees from various backgrounds, showcasing the importance of unity and dialogue in fostering a peaceful community. Among those in attendance were the Honourable Commissioner for Transportation, Pst. Ekpenyong Cobham; Honourable Commissioner for Commerce, Hon. Abigail Duke; DG Waterway, Mr. Effiong Okon; SA to the Governor on Legislative Matters, Barr. Hon. Joe Etene; and Rev. Fr. Etene, among others.

The event was successfully hosted in partnership with the Bakassi International Fish Festival.
