Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have accepted an invitation to visit the country from its chief of defense staff, and are planning a trip to Nigeria in May to attend events and activities associated with the Invictus Games. The duchess revealed in 2022 that she had discovered a previously unknown personal link with Nigeria, a West African country.
The Duchess of Sussex discovered this through genealogy testing. She shares 43% Nigerian heritage. She made this revelation into her genetic heritage on an episode of her podcast, Archetype with Nigerian American actress and comedian Issa Rae, writer Ziwe Fumudoh and professor Emily Bernards. This connection has made the choice of Nigeria for the Invictus Games particularly meaningful for her.
This will be the couple’s first joint public visit to Africa, and their first official visit to Nigeria.
Although this has come with several kick-backs from the governments of the United States and United Kingdom, who are seriousy advising the couple against visiting Nigeria at this moment, sighting terrorism and insecurity as top reasons.
