In a tragic incident, a telecommunication mast owned by a microfinance firm in Calabar collapsed, causing extensive damage to the residence of Reverend Evans Uwaoma Obiokor, a minister in the Methodist Church. The unfortunate event occurred on Thursday.

The destruction has been estimated to be worth N35 million, according to the Bishop of the Diocese of Atamunu Methodist Cathedral of Favour in Calabar, Otuekong Ukut. An architect’s assessment revealed the severity of the loss, which affected three buildings: Office Building: Sustained damage to the roof, woodwork, electrical systems, and office equipment; Minister’s Residence: Reverend Obiokor’s home, where he resides with his wife and children, suffered significant harm; and Service Quarter and Back House: Both structures were hit by the fallen mast, resulting in damage to appliances, electronics, and books.

The situation is dire, not only due to the physical destruction but also because of the threat to Reverend Obiokor’s life. The electrical wires in his home are sparking, and the presence of water on the floor (from yesterday’s rain) poses additional danger once the Power Holding Company (PHCN) restores electricity.

“We have asked our legal officer to inform the Ekondo microfinance bank. At the moment, we have to relocate the minister because the electrical wires in his home are sparking. The water you saw on the floor of his home because of yesterday’s rain can spark up once light is brought by the Power Holding Company (PHCN)” Ukut said.

In response, the Methodist Church has taken swift action. The Prelate at the headquarters and the board of trustees have been informed, and an emergency meeting is anticipated. All Methodist church property falls under the purview of the board of trustees.

Despite their efforts, the microfinance bank responsible for the mast is yet to respond to their calls. Meanwhile, the branch manager at 8 Miles Calabar, Mrs. Joy Koku, remains tight-lipped, citing authorization constraints.
